Professional Practice: GISP practice questions

Professional Practice on the GISP exam covers ethics and the GISCI Code of Ethics, certification and licensure, liability, copyright and data licensing, privacy and professional communication. Here are five sample questions from our bank of 40 on this category, each with the answer and a short explanation.

Question 1 · Easy · Conceptual

Continuing professional development and certification (such as the GISP) primarily aim to:

  1. Guarantee a higher salary by law
  2. Exempt the holder from following data licenses
  3. Replace the need for any project documentation
  4. Demonstrate ongoing competency, ethical commitment, and contribution to the profession
Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. Professional certification and continuing education recognize sustained competency, ethical commitment, education, and contributions to the field; they do not exempt holders from legal or ethical obligations.

Question 2 · Easy · Conceptual

Metadata in a GIS context primarily provides:

  1. The software license key needed to open the data
  2. Structured documentation about a dataset's source, accuracy, lineage, projection, and use constraints
  3. The raw geometry coordinates of every feature
  4. A rendered cartographic output ready for printing
Show answer and explanation

Answer: B. Metadata is 'data about data': it documents lineage, accuracy, spatial reference, attributes, contacts, and use limitations so others can evaluate fitness for use. It is a professional documentation responsibility.

Question 3 · Medium · Application

During QC, an analyst runs topology checks on a parcel layer. The most likely defects these checks detect are:

  1. Geometric errors such as gaps, overlaps, and dangling nodes between adjacent polygons
  2. Slow internet connections to the server
  3. Incorrect map title fonts
  4. Outdated software version numbers
Show answer and explanation

Answer: A. Topology rules validate spatial relationships, flagging gaps, overlaps, slivers, and dangles. These checks are a standard QC step to ensure geometric integrity in layers like parcels.

Question 4 · Medium · Data Interpretation

An RFP weights technical approach 50 percent, experience 30 percent, and price 20 percent. Vendor A scores 80, 90 and 60 on those criteria; Vendor B scores 70, 70 and 95. Which vendor ranks higher under the weighted evaluation, and by how many points?

  1. Vendor B, by 4 points
  2. Vendor A, by 10 points
  3. Vendor A, by 4 points
  4. They tie at 77 points
Show answer and explanation

Answer: C. Vendor A = 0.5(80) + 0.3(90) + 0.2(60) = 40 + 27 + 12 = 79; Vendor B = 0.5(70) + 0.3(70) + 0.2(95) = 35 + 21 + 19 = 75, so A leads by 4. This illustrates best-value procurement, where the lowest price does not automatically win when weighting is published in advance.

Question 5 · Hard · Scenario

A GIS analyst at a consulting firm discovers that a manager is knowingly submitting falsified wetland boundaries to a regulator to win a permit for a client. Which course of action best reflects professional ethics?

  1. Remain silent, since loyalty to the employer and client takes priority
  2. Quietly correct the boundaries in the firm's files without telling anyone
  3. Post the evidence publicly on social media to force an immediate response
  4. Document the concern, raise it through internal channels, and if it is not corrected report it to the appropriate authority
Show answer and explanation

Answer: D. Professional codes place the duty to society and to honest representation above employer loyalty, but expect the professional to act responsibly: document, escalate internally first, and then disclose to the proper authority if the harm is not addressed. Silence and silent file edits leave the fraudulent submission in place, and public exposure as a first step skips the appropriate channels.

What this category tests

Professional Practice is one of the ten knowledge categories in the official GISCI exam blueprint. Questions are vendor-neutral: they test concepts and professional judgement rather than the menus of one software package, and they come as conceptual, application, scenario and data-interpretation items. Expect the exam to mix easy recall with harder scenario questions where you must choose the best course of action.
