Cartography & Visualization: GISP practice questions
Cartography & Visualization on the GISP exam covers map design, symbology and visual variables, classification, colour, labeling, generalization, thematic map types and web maps. Here are five sample questions from our bank of 40 on this category, each with the answer and a short explanation.
Question 1 · Easy · Conceptual
A contiguous area cartogram of national election results intentionally distorts the shapes and sizes of states. What governs the size each state is drawn?
- Its true land area, rescaled to fit the page
- The density of its population per square kilometer
- A data value such as population or electoral votes, so area is proportional to that value
- The number of neighboring states it shares a border with

- Map scale denominator
- County land area in farmland (producing a yield per unit area)
- Total county population
- Number of counties in the state

Question 4 · Medium · Application
Following standard label-placement conventions, the preferred position for a point feature's label is generally:
- Directly underneath, left-aligned
- Rotated vertically along the symbol
- Upper-right of the symbol, clear of other features
- Centered on top of the symbol

Questions are vendor-neutral: they test concepts and professional judgement rather than the menus of one software package, and they come as conceptual, application, scenario and data-interpretation items. Expect the exam to mix easy recall with harder scenario questions where you must choose the best course of action.
