Conceptual Foundations: GISP practice questions

Conceptual Foundations on the GISP exam covers the nature of geographic information: scale, spatial relationships, Tobler's first law, MAUP, levels of measurement, field versus object views, and how GIS represents the world. Here are five sample questions from our bank of 40 on this category, each with the answer and a short explanation.

Question 1 · Easy · Conceptual

Euclidean distance between two points is:

  1. The shortest travel distance along a road network
  2. The sum of the north-south and east-west offsets
  3. The straight-line distance across a plane
  4. The great-circle distance on the Earth's surface

Answer: C. Euclidean distance is the as-the-crow-flies planar distance. Network distance follows links, Manhattan distance sums axis offsets, and great-circle distance follows the curved surface of the sphere.

Question 2 · Easy · Conceptual

Compared with a 1:250,000 map, a 1:10,000 map is:

  1. Smaller scale, covering more ground in less detail
  2. Larger scale, covering less ground in more detail

  1. Accurate but not precise
  2. Precise but not accurate

  4. Neither accurate nor precise

Question 4 · Medium · Scenario

A land-suitability study overlays five polygon layers digitised from different sources, each with its own positional error. What should the analyst expect in the result?

  1. Errors in the individual layers cancel out, so the composite is more accurate than any input
  2. The composite inherits only the error of the least accurate layer
  3. Positional error is irrelevant because overlay is an attribute operation
  4. Uncertainty propagates and compounds, producing sliver polygons and composite error greater than any single input

Answer: D. Each overlay combines the positional uncertainty of its inputs, so boundaries that should coincide produce slivers and the output is no more reliable than its worst input, and usually less. Error propagation is a core reason to document lineage and accuracy.

Question 5 · Hard · Data Interpretation

An accuracy assessment of a parcel layer yields a horizontal RMSE of 2.0 m against independent survey checkpoints. Under the common 95 percent confidence reporting convention for horizontal accuracy (multiplying radial RMSE by about 1.73), the reported accuracy is approximately:

  1. 3.5 m
  2. 2.0 m
  3. 4.0 m
  4. 6.0 m

What this category tests

Conceptual Foundations is one of the ten knowledge categories in the official GISCI exam blueprint. Questions are vendor-neutral: they test concepts and professional judgement rather than the menus of one software package, and they come as conceptual, application, scenario and data-interpretation items. Expect the exam to mix easy recall with harder scenario questions where you must choose the best course of action.
